What is Hashing in Blockchain Technology?

Hashing is a process used in blockchain technology to convert input data into a fixed-length string of characters, called a hash, using a mathematical function. This hash is unique to the input data, meaning even a slight change in the input will result in a completely different hash. Hashing ensures security, integrity, and efficiency in a blockchain.

Hashing is not easy; a miner attempted nearly 2.9 billion hash combinations to secure blockchain block 775,771. Generating the hash acceptable by the network is a highly energy-intensive endeavour, and as such, the network is secured by the Proof of Work (PoW).

Why Hashing is Important in Blockchain:

1. Data Integrity: If even a tiny change is made to a block's data, its hash changes completely, making tampering easy to detect.
2. Security: Hashing makes it extremely difficult to reverse-engineer the original data from the hash, ensuring sensitive information is kept private.
3. Proof of Work (PoW): Miners solve complex mathematical problems by finding a hash that meets specific conditions, validating new blocks and securing the network.
4. Efficient Linking: Hashes from one block are included in the next block, creating a chain. This ensures that altering one block would require changing all subsequent blocks, which is practically impossible in a secure blockchain.

What is FACT0RN?

FACT0RN is a unique blockchain platform that uses a different system for mining called integer factorisation instead of the usual hashing method. This sets it apart from traditional blockchains like Bitcoin. FACT0RN started as a fork of Bitcoin and let users use its FACT coins to nominate numbers for factorisation in something called a "deadpool."
